Alan Smith OAM

• Past District Governor 1983/84

Alan is one of the most remarkable people in Adelaide West Club. Having had his 90th Birthday in January 2012, we continue to be astounded about the wealth of information about Rotary Alan continues to share with newer Rotarians, straight off the tip of his tongue.

Alan was inducted into Adelaide West Rotary in 1974! Imagine the projects he has influence over almost 4 decades of selfless service!

Today, he remains on the Adelaide West Board and Chairs the International Service portfolio.

Self employed 57 years, Alan ran Importing; Building and Real Estate, Development businesses.

Widowed now, he has four adult children; a son, 4 daughters (one now deceased); 5 grand children; 3 great grand children.

Pre World War II, he was heavily into Scouting. Kings Scout, Gilwell Badge. Long Service Award.

War Service, Australian Army, 6 years. Post war, organizer 65 Reunions.

Councillor, City of West Torrens, 1954-58

Foundation Trustee, West Beach Recreation Reserve Trust

Justice of the Peace since 1954

President of Adelaide West Rotary for the 1978/79 year.

1981, led a Rotary FAIM work team, 1st of six teams, to Kimil, a small indigenous village in the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea, to build a hospital building, a maternity block, and 3 small houses.

Rotary D9500 District Governor, 1983/84 year

Served as a member of many District Committees Nationally, for 8 years, wrote quarterly articles in RDU as RAWCS’s newsletter editor. Served as Chairman National IPAC Committee.

For Institute of Governors, served on the Agenda Committee for Institute in Hobart 1985; as Chair of Management Committee. Sesqui-Centenary Institute Glenelg 1986

D9500 representative at Council-on-Legislation in Singapore1989

Awarded an OAM in 1991.

Rotary Paul Harris Fellow with 5 Sapphire Pins and a Ruby Pin.

Awarded The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service.

Made a member of D9500 Paul Harris Society.
